What Happens When You Don’t Drink Enough Water?
I love drinking water! Some people don’t because it doesn’t have any taste, but I can guzzle down a big glass of pure water in no time. I always thought I drank plenty of water every day, but you know how it is…days get busy and it’s easy to forget about it sometimes. What I didn’t realize was how often I was forgetting, or that I wasn’t really drinking enough. We need half our body weight in ounces daily, ideally with a pinch of sea salt for trace minerals and electrolytes.
A couple years ago I was at a point where my knees were killing me when I walked up stairs or had to squat down for anything. I happened to read something about joints and water, so I filled up a 2-liter bottle with water and started sucking it down immediately. The bottle was a visual reminder of how much I was drinking. My knees felt better the next day. Seriously! It was that simple.
This video explains that our cartilage and spinal discs are made of about 80% water, so I guess that would explain the knee pain. The video has a lot of other great info in it about what happens to our bodies when we don’t get enough water. More than half the world’s population suffers from dehydration without even realizing it. Take a few minutes to watch it and see for yourself what other things happen when we are dehydrated.
While I am a fan of water, I am not a fan of bad tasting water, or the chemicals and fluoride put in city water. Neither are you, I’m sure. Plastic water bottles are not a great daily option, either, although when you’re on the go it’s better than nothing. I use a Berkey water filter to get all the bad stuff out…we love it! Most water pitchers, like Brita, for example, remove some of the chemicals but not the fluoride. I added fluoride filters to our Berkey. Alexapure says their pitcher filters out fluoride as well, and it’s convenient to keep in the refrigerator.
